Brailey's Oregon Discovery Girl Experience

Brailey had a BIG time being an Oregon Discovery Girl! Over the past few weeks, she had a lot to keep her busy as she prepared for her big trip to Portland. She finished her writing assignments (there were several of them!), went shopping for a few new clothes, had her hair trimmed, and prepared for her interview with KMTR Newsource 16. And let me just tell you, she loved every second of all of it!

She had to wear a special outfit for our outing to the stores, because she knew I would be taking her picture (she didn't have to, but she definitely took a fair amount of time picking this outfit out, right down to the earrings and necklace...). Part of being an Oregon Discovery Girl was to document what she did to prepare herself for the photo shoots. So we took pictures of every step along the way... If you know her mother at all (yes, that would be me!), then you know this was no problem at all. I am always my B's paparazzi!
Clinton washed her hair and Erica trimmed the dead ends off. She always loves having her hair done at our favorite salon, Reflections in Coburg. Their slogan is "they love what they do, and it shows," and that is the truth! They are a super fun salon full of wonderful stylists who always make us feel special. We love what they do, too!
The Monday before her trip to Portland, we got up extra early to meet Kelly Warner from KMTR and her camera man outside of the school where they conducted an interview with Brailey. She was super nervous, but she did a great job, and we are so very proud of her. CLICK HERE to see the interview. It was a big thrill for her, to say the least! We will treasure the interview forever and ever... And ever!

That night, she set all her outfits and clothes out on her bed, and then I packed it all up into her groovy little suitcase. Shortly thereafter, I found it parked it in the hallway, along with Lamby and Starry, of course - she doesn't travel anywhere without them. She was set to jet!

Unfortunately, she didn't get a lot of sleep on Tuesday night. She and I drove up that evening to our hotel, but we ended up with some loud neighbors, and they talked and watched TV for a very long time. And the traffic was a bit louder than we are used to, also. Still, she was up and at 'em and ready to shine at the Portland Rock Gym first thing Wednesday morning, where she met all the other Oregon Discovery Girls and also Gloria and Ashley from the magazine (see picture below). It was really special for her to be able to climb the rock wall, because last summer, she had her cast on and wasn't able to climb the one Brady and Britt climbed in Sublimity at the rodeo - she had to stand there and watch them have all the fun. But on Tuesday, she got all the rock climbing she could stand! And her arms paid the price, because she was pretty sore for the next few days. But it was worth it! See that happy glow on her face?
Gloria, Brailey and Ashley.
Here, she is showing me one of the poses she did for the camera man. This is her "wink."

And then the grand finale, the big photo shoot on Thursday. She was so exhausted Wednesday night, she got much better sleep (thankfully we had quiet neighbors!). I dropped her off bright and early Thursday morning, and they whisked her right into hair and makeup. Below is the picture we took after I picked her up, just outside the studio. As we were leaving, I asked her, "Was it your dream come true?" And she said, "Oh Mom! It was more than my dream come true!" And then she gushed about her experience the rest of the day. She has been so humble and sweet about all of it, and I'm so grateful she understands what an honor and a privilege it is. It is going to be hard to wait for January for her issue of the magazine to come out. How will we stand it?! In the meantime, I'm so happy she had something like this to enjoy, because she is truly a sweetheart of a child, and it was special for our entire family to experience. Everyone should feel like a star every now and then, right? And don't worry - when the issue comes out, we will shout it to the rooftops!

  2. What a fun blog! My daughter, Skyler B., is a Minnesota Discovery Girl, and we did a video blog of her experience: http://www.discoverygirls.com/dg-blog/blog/behind-scenes-meet-skyler-minnesota As you can see, we made it a family experience, too. Skyler has taken it all in stride, and I've been proud of how she's handled all of the attention. We went to Milwaukee, WI, in January for her photo shoots, and we still have to wait THREE more months until her issue comes out. It feels like forever! Brailey is a gorgeous young lady, and we will be looking for her in the January 2013 issue, for sure! Many blessings!
